Defuse was launched by founder and CEO Philip Grindell.
“A highly skilled, knowledgable and experienced security professional, offering wise advice strategically and tactically. I have benefitted, as have colleagues, from Philip’s expertise”
Kathryn Stone OBE, FIoD (Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards at House of Commons)
After the murder of Jo Cox in 2016, Philip Grindell was personally brought in to Parliament to protect other politicians and prevent further events from happening.
Now, working alongside a team of handpicked experts, he brings the same level of intelligence and counsel to high-profile individuals, organisations and their teams who are dealing with or want to prevent abuse, threats, or a high-risk situation.
More Than Safety & Security
As someone who lives in the spotlight of the public eye, your safety isn’t the only thing that’s on the line. Your reputation, your mental health, and your overall well-being are all at stake if you’ve been abused online or targeted with a threat.
It can feel hopeless or lonely being in that position. But we believe that the freedom to live your life and leverage your position in this world for good is something worth fighting for.
That’s why we’ve built a team of world-class specialists who can analyse, investigate and defuse any real or potential threat, protect you and your family, and help you get back to living a life free of fear or anxiety.
The Problems We Seek to Solve
High profile people and organisations are increasingly seen as being approachable and responsible via the internet. High profile people and organisations use the internet, and more specifically Social Media to communicate, advertise, and express themselves.
Whilst many who follow and engage are supportive and those who are not whilst they may disagree, they do so in an appropriate manner. Increasingly, however, Social Media platforms can become hostile. What is known is that people who communicate and engage in social commentary often feel more willing to express themselves and be more hostile on the internet that they would in real life.
There will be those who feel that they have established or want to establish a relationship with the person/organisation they interact with and then become hostile when their emotions are not reciprocated. There are others who strongly disagree and become increasingly hostile and at times become threatening or seek to intimidate. There are those who seek to share fake news and damage or destroy reputations There are those who pose a genuine physical threat.
There are those who are fixated, their communications can be mishandled. High profile people and organisations are becoming increasingly anxious, fearful and confused about these interactions. They are unable to identify who the communicators are, whether they pose a threat and how to manage the communications and manage their reputations.
This uncertainty compounds their fear and frustration and the lack of control they experience.
Much of the advice available is generalist, is not based on evidence, and lacks proof of concept and fails to distinguish between those who make a threat and those that pose one. Much of the advice available fails to recognise the differing threats, reputational, psychological, financial and physical and seeks to treat these as one rather than individually distinguible with differing solutions. The general solution offered is not to respond and/or to remove oneself from the platform thereby enabling the ‘aggressor’ to win, and to suppress the voice of the targeted.
As the world evolves from Covid, a global recession is likely and redundancies, bankruptcy, unemployment and financial hardship may generate significant hostility and grievances targeted towards those who are held responsible. Those who pursue their grievances may travel along a ‘pathway to violence’ that may pose an extreme threat that without expert intervention may prove catastrophic.
