Twitter’s offices are to be closed as Elon Musk and his team are terrified employees are going to sabotage the company.

Why would the world’s richest man fear that his new company is going to be attacked?

 Since Elon Musk bought Twitter he has made mass redundancies, many by email.

 Since then, many other have apparently resigned.

 So why is he fearful of a targeted response to sabotage Twitter? Let us examine this from a security risk perspective.

 Let’s put the fact that we are in a global economic crisis and are just a few weeks from Christmas to one side.

 Targeted or intended attacks are driven by grievances.

 Grievances are driven by one of four causes.

  • Blame
  • Loss
  • Anger
  • Humiliation

 If we imagine how those who have been made redundant feel, all of those causes of grievance will be present….with some experiences all four of them.

 Those emotions are deeply felt and are behind many of the incidents that other companies experience.

When we then consider the four groups who target companies, they are:

  • Employees and former employees
  • Customers/Clients
  • Criminals
  • Externally driven (such as where a domestic incident or child custody issues is brought in to the workplace)

 So, what can be learnt.

When considering how to deal with people who we engage with, be they employees, clients, or others we must consider the four causes of grievance and consider how we can manage these from a risk perspective.

 The strategy must seek to:

  • Reduce
  • Avoid
  • Remove
  • Accept

The causes and impact of each of the causes.
