About Defuse Global

Quietly effective

Defuse Global is a Privacy and Personal Threat Management practice. We work with prominent individuals, families and the advisers around them, and we keep our client list deliberately small so each one gets direct attention. Where lawyers, a family office or a security team are already involved, we agree early who is responsible for what.

Most of the work is preventative. We make clients hard to find, and even harder to target, before anyone gives them cause for concern.

When someone’s behaviour does cause concern and its meaning is unclear, we establish what is happening before assumptions harden into decisions. Often the right advice is reassurance; sometimes it is swift action. Either way, it is measured and based on evidence. If a matter goes on to involve the police or additional protection, we stay involved, assessing and advising alongside them.

What we offer is that judgement. When we recommend another provider, we have vetted them first, and we tell you about any working relationship we have with them. We never use fear to win work. Our clients should be able to get on with their lives without carrying the worry themselves, and that is what all of it is for.

What clients and colleagues say

“Defuse Global’s ability to identify, analyze, and assess online hate and targeted threat is genuinely first class. It has allowed us to make smarter, more proportionate decisions – strengthening defense and deterrence around the Principal and their family while protecting the security budget and ensuring financially prudent outcomes.

At a personal level, Philip is the person who tells me whether my client is actually in danger, and if so, what to do about it.

He won’t oversell, he won’t undersell- he’ll just tell me the truth. That clarity and integrity are invaluable. Defuse’s regular reporting provides calm, evidence-based reassurance, cutting through noise and unfounded concern. On one occasion, their rigorous, scientific assessment enabled appropriate escalation to law enforcement, resulting in a decisive outcome.

Defuse Global is now a trusted part of our protective ecosystem, and I would recommend them without hesitation.”

— CSO, US-based Private Family Office

“When you are targeted, it’s both terrifying and unclear what you should actually do about it. Yes, you have legal recourse but it’s slow, expensive, and a large distraction for your organization to pursue. Philip and his team specialize in this situation and have dealt with hundreds of other cases. They were invaluable in guiding us. Most importantly, the course of action they recommended proved correct.”

— Sarah Cone, Founder and Managing Partner, Social Impact Capital, New York City

“I had been stalked and harassed for six years, and false allegations against me had reached the CPS. I was nearly out of money and out of hope. Philip made no grand promises. He gave me blunt, accurate advice and told me, ‘I am not going to walk away from this.’ He was true to his word. Within days, he and Dr Lorraine Sheridan produced an independent assessment that reached the CPS in time. The result: no further action. All allegations rejected. His timely assistance may well have made THE difference.”

— Don Macpherson, Mind Coach

“I met Philip Grindell in February 2019 through my work as an Ambassador for The Jo Cox Foundation. He explained how he had been involved in setting up Operation PLAIT after the murder of my sister Jo in June 2016. I was instantly impressed with his calm demeanour, professional approach, and sensitivity to my situation. During the last 6 months Philip has been a huge help in advising both The Jo Cox Foundation and me personally on any concerns regarding safety and security. For our family, having someone we can turn to in this way has provided a great deal of comfort and reassurance, and I could not have asked for a better person than Philip to turn to for advice. He is honest, straight-talking and does what he says he will do. I am hugely grateful for the guidance Philip has given me so far, and I would recommend his services without hesitation.”

Philip Grindell MSc CSyP

Founder & Principal Adviser

philip grindell chartered security professional Philip Grindell MSc CSyP

Philip Grindell is a trusted risk and threat adviser to prominent individuals, families, and the advisers who support them. He is typically brought in early, when increased exposure, scrutiny, or uncertainty begins to affect judgement, behaviour, or decision-making — often before a situation is clearly dangerous.

As founder and CEO of Defuse Global, Philip advises family offices, private clients, lawyers, and strategic communications firms on how to recognise emerging personal risk and respond proportionately, discreetly, and without unnecessary disruption. His role is to help clients and advisers separate genuine concern from noise, reducing anxiety and preventing overreaction at critical moments.

Philip brings over 35 years’ experience from senior roles in UK law enforcement, counter-terrorism, intelligence, and protective security. He began his career as a Scotland Yard Detective, including a secondment to British intelligence, and later served as a Counter-Terrorism Security Coordinator, responsible for security planning around high-profile events involving members of the Royal Family and UK Government.

His approach to advisory work was shaped by real-world decision-making in high-consequence environments. After the murder of Jo Cox MP he set up and led The Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team. In that role he assessed the plot against Rosie Cooper MP as a genuine threat and initiated the investigation. He was trained in threat assessment by the architect of the US Secret Service methodology for assessing targeted attacks.

Most of Philip’s casework concerns personal, behavioural, and targeted threats affecting prominent individuals — including fixation, stalking, harassment, lone-actor risk, and reputationally sensitive situations. Where required, his advisory role draws on discreet investigations, behavioural threat assessment, and intelligence-led enquiries, supported by forensic psychological expertise. These tools are used selectively and in context, always in service of sound judgement rather than activity for its own sake.

Philip holds an MSc in Security Management and is a Chartered Security Professional. He is the author of Personal Threat Management (2025) and is a regular media contributor on security and threat-related issues, appearing across national television, radio, and print. He also speaks internationally to professional audiences on risk, behaviour, and decision-making under pressure.

Defuse Global is a deliberately small, specialist advisory practice that works primarily through trusted referrals. The firm is recognised in the Spear’s 500 as Top Recommended in Security, Intelligence and Investigations.

Amanda Grindell - Defuse Global Amanda Grindell

Before joining Defuse Global, Amanda worked in the TSCM and commercial counter-espionage sector, where discretion is the operating standard rather than the marketing line.

That background shapes how she supports both Philip and the clients the firm advises. People often come to Defuse Global at moments of uncertainty or unease, sharing concerns they may not have raised elsewhere. Amanda understands that trust is built through quiet consistency — doing what she says she will do, accurately and without fuss.

She oversees operations and coordinates client engagements, making sure the work runs smoothly behind the scenes. Her international background allows her to work comfortably across regions and time zones, and her steady, attentive manner helps clients feel heard during sensitive or difficult conversations.

Dr Lorraine Sheridan is an internationally recognised forensic psychologist with more than 25 years of experience specialising in stalking, harassment, family violence and behavioural threat assessment.

Having completed Europe’s first PhD on stalking, Lorraine has spent much of her career improving how police, governments, courts and security professionals understand and respond to threatening behaviour.

A former Associate Professor at Curtin University in Australia, Lorraine is a Chartered Forensic Psychologist, registered in both the UK and Australia, and a former President of the Asia Pacific Association of Threat Assessment Professionals.

She has written five books and published more than 80 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Her research has had a direct influence on policing and criminal justice. An evidence-based harassment risk assessment tool she developed was used by police forces across England and Wales for many years. She has also advised governments internationally on legislation relating to stalking, harassment and family violence.

Before moving to Australia, Lorraine spent more than a decade advising UK police forces on complex cases and was an accredited Behavioural Investigative Adviser (offender profiler). She continues to advise law enforcement agencies, businesses, security professionals and public figures around the world.

At Defuse Global, Lorraine personally assesses cases involving stalking, fixation, harassment, threatening communications and other concerning behaviour. She examines the evidence, considers the circumstances and behaviour of those involved, and assesses the nature and level of threat.

Her work continues beyond the initial assessment. Lorraine advises on how identified threats should be managed and helps clients put her recommendations into practice. She remains involved where necessary, reviewing new information, advising on interventions and helping clients and their representatives respond to changes in behaviour or circumstances.

Drawing on her research and extensive casework, Lorraine helps clients understand what the evidence tells them, where concerns are justified and what action is appropriate. Her advice is practical, proportionate and grounded in a detailed understanding of human behaviour.

Miles Manning - Defuse Global

Miles Manning

Crisis Management Specialist

Miles Manning - Defuse Global Miles Manning

A crisis rarely arrives with clear facts. Several organisations want to act at once, and the family at the centre still needs to be kept steady.

That is where Miles comes in. When an incident affects a Defuse Global client, he leads the response. He establishes what is actually known (and what is still only rumour), then brings the family office, lawyers, security provider, communications advisers and, where they are involved, the police onto one plan. As the facts change he keeps that plan current; nobody acts on yesterday’s information, and the family has one person to call.

Much of his work happens before anything goes wrong. He helps families and their advisers agree in advance who decides what if a serious incident occurs, and how they will reach each other at short notice. When something does happen, everyone already knows their part, and Miles is there to help. He represents the family’s best interests quietly and professionally, and acts as their link with the police and other authorities; the family is heard without having to manage those conversations themselves.

His grounding is in intelligence. In the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command he coordinated national covert projects, bringing regional units and partner agencies with competing priorities together. He has led teams deployed to difficult incidents in the UK and overseas, and he negotiates calmly when interests pull apart.

Alongside his work for Defuse Global clients, he works with government agencies in the Middle East and Ukraine and advises private companies on handling the human side of serious incidents.

Miles is a former New Scotland Yard detective and served in the armed forces.

Graham Hazel MVO

Graham Hazel MVO is a highly experienced protective security specialist and former Metropolitan Police Royalty Protection Officer, whose career has included responsibility for the personal safety and security of senior members of the British Royal Family.

During his service with Scotland Yard’s Royalty Protection team, Graham served as Personal Protection Officer to HRH The Princess Royal. Graham brings that experience to Defuse Global, advising prominent individuals, families and their representatives on personal protection and physical security.

His particular strength lies in helping clients understand whether close protection is necessary, what level of protection is appropriate and how it can be arranged without placing unnecessary restrictions on their daily lives.

As Defuse Global operates independently of close protection providers, Graham can offer impartial advice on selecting suitable personnel, assessing existing arrangements and ensuring that any protective measures are proportionate to the risks involved.

His approach is practical, discreet and informed by years of protecting people whose safety, privacy and freedom of movement must be carefully balanced.

Graham was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) in recognition of his service to Royalty Protection.
